Beautiful bride, beautiful venues, beautiful memories!

Such an easy group of amazing people we got to shoot.

The day was so special for Elise and Adam and all of their friends and family.

We were very lucky to share their day with everyone there.

I was just writing Elise and Adam yesterday telling them how much fun I remembered having while I went thru their wonderful pictures; I told them how much I miss that day!

In wonderful Sonoma County, the weather was perfect and the smiles were big.

My amazing wife Erin and I were lucky enough to visit home for Labor Day weekend, and in the process be a part of a picture perfect wedding.

Carling and Scott were probably made for each other a long long time ago.

They are both people to look up to.

And their marriage will be truly wonderful to watch grow.

They were married out in Mountain Ranch, CA at an awesome little rustic getaway ranch place thing.

It was a day full of fun friends and awkward speeches and amazing vegan food and the best vegan cake both my lovely wife and I have ever had!

My wonderful wife and I flew down to the Bay for an awesomely long 4th of July weekend vacation.

During that time, our friends Alie Renton and Chris Scott were getting married in Livermore, and my talented and gifted sister-in-law Emily Agenjo at http://www.emilyagenjo.com/ was shooting their wedding and asked me to assist her.

Obviously I said yes because I knew the day was going to be fun and the people easy and beautiful.

Chris and Alie were champs; they looked better than anyone else did in the 100+ degree weather, and held it together in the 105+ degree barn they got married in.

We love them, as does everyone else.

A little more than a year after my marriage at beautiful Union Hill in Columbia/Sonora, CA, I'm back.

I was lucky enough to spend a beautiful day at the most wonderful places in my memories with Kym and Jasper.

Union Hill is an amazing old ranch on several dozen acres that used to be home to ranchers and gold miners.

Now it's the best place to get married.

Kym and Jasper made a good choice.

After another plane ride to San Diego, I met

Eric Turner at Eric Turner Photography

We had a blast, blasting everyone with our cameras and dancing on the dance floor.
The weather was perfect yet again, and the venue was gorgeous, with beautiful lighting and orange trees and greenery all over in this oasis in the middle of the SoCal desert.

and we went to Hume Lake for another wedding.

Sara and Paul's day was bright and temperate, perfect wedding weather, especially for their sunny ceremony by the lake and reception on the giant lawn.

Sara and Paul were fun and photogenic, making our jobs way too easy.

I'm rushing through this before I fly to San Diego with my beautiful and marvelous wife to shoot a wedding, but Brandi is an old friend of mine from elementary school, so I've known her for a long long time. Brandi and Kevin's wedding had a midievil or renassaince feel, at their friend's property complete with a tavern, beer barrels, castle, thrones, peacocks, archer targets, jousting arena, torture cages, and fire show. It was one of the most unique places and weddings I've ever seen, and also one of the most beautiful.

We were kindly invited to Maine, to Acadia National Park (by far one of the most beautiful places in the world and definitely in the states) by friends of mine that I worked with in California.. Max and Amanda uprooted their California lives to go back east for school and work and home purchasing purposes.. They wanted to get married in one of their favorite places, so they had a small wedding in the park at a beautiful inn right on one of the islands many harbors.. The day was wonderful and exactly what the fun and easy going lovers deserved!

This was the first same sex wedding I have shot or attended, and it was such a beautiful day.. Two gorgeous brides with two wonderful families celebrated a long awaited union at Villa Ragusa in Campbell.. They both looked wonderful in their gowns and the whole day had a warm atmosphere and fun people.. I was so happy for them both..

I shot another wedding with my buddy Eric Turner at Eric Turner Photography in Camarillo at The Camarillo Ranch.. The place is awesome and has a huge sweet red barn that just makes every picture POP.... the couple, Turner's friends, were easy going and looked great.. It was a cloudy day - it rained right after the couple finished communion! Only for about a minute.... then it was done for the day.. It was perfect timing, and was actually kinda magical.. They had bingo, an ice cream bar, and cow girl boots.. Pretty legit..

April 25, 2009: The Rescue

The Rescue 2009 was a global event organized by the Invisible Children organization, meant to raise government and celebrity awareness about child soldiers in Africa.. We made a public "abduction" and marched in small groups to a "camp" where we spent the night asking public figures to "rescue" us, in hopes that enough awareness and media attention would pressure world governments to step in and rescue these abducted children and press for peace talks amongst warring Africans.. It was fun, especially when one of the founders of Invisible Children came up on a bus with the recently rescued Santa Monica group to join our fight in San Francisco.. Shot on Fuji Pro 400 H..

Ivory Owl is my favorite band.. Partly because my amazing and talented friend Josh composes half of the glory, and my wonderful and beautiful is the other important piece.. And mostly because it's emotional, moving and inspiring to listen and watch them play.. They played at a friends awesome house, a beautiful venue, and raised awareness and money for Freedom Firm, an organization devoted to fight sex trafficking.. It was a wonderful night, perfect weather and beautiful rock and roll music.. And Josh broke not one, but TWO strings.. During the best song.. It was so rock.. Eric Turner and I went to Monterey to shoot Sarah and Clinton's wedding, where we enjoyed a beautiful wedding in a beautiful setting.. The bridal party was super fun... the girls' green dresses and the guys' green ties were awesome, and went way better with Sara's choice of orange than anyone had expected.. There were just too many fun things to shoot, and we got some great pictures..

Stephanie and Daniel's wedding was so much fun and turned out so great.. I shot it with Eric Turner, and we were both skeptical of it being in Visalia at the end of summer.. But being within the grounds of a beautiful house on a walnut farm shaded by huge trees, it was way cooler and beautiful than we could have imagined.. The couple was great, the bride gorgeous, and the bridal party fun as hell.... for their first dance, they busted out this amazing choreographed dance to a super gangster rap song.... it was the most incredible first dance ever.. It will never be topped.. We were pretty bummed because they didn't tell us that they were busting out, and so we weren't ready to capture that kind of action! I was lucky enough to catch the cartwheel just by swinging my camera up at the last millisecond and hitting the shutter instinctively, without looking.. But I think we grabbed some good stuff... I mean, it is the Turner/Ho magnif duo......

Beth and Will had a gorgeous wedding.. The church in down town San Jose was amazing, I had never been in there.. The reception was at the Sainte Claire Hotel, right down the street.. It was really crowded, but fun -- I had to shoot them through the mirror when they were cutting the cake! I got a lot more great pictures than I thought at first.. I'm happy...... I even got one of my favorite pictures in a long time, following...

Fun wedding!! Great bride and groom, they were super fun.. I felt really bad for Russel because it was so hot during their ceremony that he was getting really light headed! I felt bad taking pictures of him sweating bullets and being comforted by his mother, but he'll look back on it and laugh, that's the kind of great guy he is.. Shannon's family owns a towing company so they had a tow truck photo op, and Barbie and Ken mini Shannon and Russel in a metal tow truck model.. She also river dances, and there was couple surprise dances that her and some guests busted out.. It was quite impressive! My favorite part was the photo booth they hired.... I want one in my house!

Tidwell's married! A long-time friend of my sister finally married his fiancee of several years, Rachel, and I shot with Eric Turner again.. It was back home, in Sonora, at Sierra Bible.. The day went beautifully! We had plenty of time before the ceremony to do a first meeting, ALL of the portraits and some fun ones of the couple.. We knew most of the people there and everyone was happy and easy going.. The pastor was hella funny.... he gave Kevin a bean pot and Rachel a teacup and explained how they were those things.. And then best man Nathan, aka Milnik, gave Kevin a funny cup that he custom made into a ball and chain mug.. Some special wedding gifts, huh?

Roles changed when Jill assisted me on a portrait session with the Magee kids at the Felton covered bridge. We were top speed the whole time, just trying to keep up with the kids. They put us to the test with their high energy, so it made for a wild afternoon. It was really hard, and I couldn't have done it without Jill there to help..

A straightforward, pretty boring shoot.. The night before I drove to a San Jose neighborhood to spend the night in my car, because it was my house mate's birthday and they were partying.. And I had to be there at like 0630.. I was bummed, no one even gave me a funny face or and exciting pose! Hopefully this guy don't mind...

Annie and John's wedding was a local Los Gatos wedding.. At the church we weren't allowed to move or move up from the back at all, much less use flash.. So I had to shoot from the balcony the whole time in ridiculously low light.. But the pics came out pretty good.. Reception was at Cinnabar, which is a nice golf resort.. Annie is one of those girls who are funny and easy going, which made shooting them together entertaining.. John is a Judo master--seriously.. By now he's probably already tried out for the Olympics in which he'd been training for.. He's like a National Champion or something crazy like that.. Don't wanna mess up a wedding like that (much less any wedding)!

April 19-20, 2008: Sea Otter Classic

The Sea Otter Classic is a HUGE biking event held in Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway.. I've been there for the World Superbike Races, and the Sea Otter is exactly as huge and laid out the same, but it's alllllll bicycles, not motorcycles.. It was amazing, I loved it.. And compared to last year apparently, the weather was much much nicer, even with all the terribly cold wind.. So I scored a last minute gig with brightroom to shoot at Laguna Seca, and was stoked.. I shot XCountry and Downhill both days, and made sure to bring some pics home.. I forgot to get some of my own pics of the huge "log jump" on the downhill course, which I'm bummed about.. I almost died here.. It's a very dangerous shot, but you're right below a big gap that's at the top of this crest, also where the course takes a little left.. So riders that come off the lip wrong go right where the crowd waits on the uphill's left side.. A rider did just that, and luckily I was the only one there at the moment, and luckily I was quick enough or ready enough to move--I dodged to my right, TOWARD the course, as the rider flew by me on my left, off the course.. He hauled down the hill about 15 or 20 yards before he hit the really tall weeds.. He rode through the waist tall weeds for another 20 yards, and somehow made his way back onto the track as the crowd blew up with cheers.. I had just dodged death.. I was taking pictures there when a rider received a complimentary compound fracture to his lower leg.. Got some pictures of that for brightroom, too.. Later, I was taking pictures at another crest, where the course gets ridiculously steep and rutted out.. You can't tell in the pics, but the riders are cooking down this course into this crazy steep/bumpy at speeds you couldn't believe.. It was also a sketchy place to shoot, but the pictures came out cool..

I shot again the Santa Cruz Half Marathon/10k, and had the same shot again.. I wanted to shoot somewhere different, but I just do what I'm told.. Saw some people I know running, and got some pics of fun people.. It was a perfect day to be outside.... there was a crazy guy who was saying awesome things to people running, so I got a lot of people smiling.. It helped me get some good pics.... afterward I drove home for my Faj's birthday party.. Pics of that special event to follow....

Shelby and Joe had their wedding in San Jose at the extravagant Saint Claire Hotel.. It was a good time to be had by all.. Joe is from Wales, and had some fun family come for the wedding, including his fun energetic dance-floor-owning Maj.... I was even one of several people to be molested by a drunk friend of the couple while on the dancefloor..

Yesterday we shot a fun couple all over the east bay.. We started in the Berkeley Hills at the Brazil House, then went to a church of Christian Sciences, which I don't even know what that is, but the church is REALLY cool, then went to Treasure Island.. It was a long day filled with stressful driving (I always drive, and driving in the city SUCKS always!).. Kevin is a marine officer, so it was funny to see how he was restricted in his uniform and from the rules he had to follow.. They were a great couple, and the reception on Treasure Island was a beautiful setting.... proven with following picture......

Jamie and Jeremy were married in Tahoe (too bad we didn't shoot that), and were having a reception dinner with friends and family.. So it was short, but fun and easy to shoot.. The couple was pretty atypical; they wore black, had sweet tattoos, and a collection of piercings.. They were super fun, and you could tell they were really happy together.. They toasted with absinthe, which apparently has a little "mix with water and serve over sugar" ritual.. It was interesting......

Six days after I got back, along with getting sicker than I have been in years, I got right back into the flow of things.. One of Jill's best friends was getting married, and she wasn't about to shoot it all, since she wanted to have fun.. So it was up to me to make it happen.. I think I made it happen..

Tony and Jackie are a bundle of fun, and their celebration exuded tons of it.. Married in Sunnyvale at the Historical Del Monte Building, it was a one location, smooth-going shoot..

February 07-10, 2008: Siem Reap

Siem Reap was just as interesting, just as breath-taking, and not as tragic or depressing.. Siem Reap is where the temples of Angkor were built.. Angkor Wat, the biggest of the hundreds, is simply out of control huge.. It's arguably the largest religious (which I've read is a debatable term for Angkor) buildings in the world.. The worst part? The number of freaking tourists.. We're all there to see the same things, but there's just so many.. It seems like the Taj, I haven't been yet..

We left Phnom Penh in the afternoon and took my last long bus ride to Siem Reap, and woke up late the next day to explore several temples.. There's so many, it would take weeks to see them all.. The next morning, we woke up before the sun, and watched the sunrise.. The last day we didn't go to the temples, as many of them, as unique and interesting as each are, start to look too much the same.. The picture opportunities were overwhelming, and I wished I had all my gear (or at least a wide angle)..

I flew out as late as possible to Bangkok, and spent a long, boring night at the airport.. The morning of the 11th, I flew out at 0645hr, and arrived at 0930 in SFO.... on the 11th.. I had the rest of the afternoon to acclimate to culture shock.. Something that's really depressing when leaving such beautiful, poor and underdeveloped, yet so much more real and rich, countries..

Another stop of ours put us in the frenzy of a market, with little kids and women selling some great fruit and some weird items.... these are fried tarantulas.. The only one alive was the one crawling on her chest.. I had to sneak this picture, cuz she tried to charge me for it..

Sadly, thus concludes my month-long trip to Southeast Asia.. I love it, and I'm going back to explore even more.. Come with me.......

February 06-07, 2008: Phnom Penh

We left from Nha Trang and flew to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia.. I was really excited to see this country because it has such an intense, violent and interesting history.. We got in late, found a place, and woke up the next day ready to see the sites before I had to leave (which was on the 10th).. We took a tuk tuk out to the "killing fields" of Cheung Ek, some kilo's out of town.. Around the time of the Vietnam War, Cambodia found itself ruled by a violent Khmer Rouge, led by the maniac Pol Pot, which 'ethnically cleansed' the population of almost a third of the country's people.. The killing fields was a secret location out of town, hidden from the citizens, where systematic killing of men, women and children took place.. Now it's a quiet, heavy, and somewhat stuffy memorial site where you walk the grounds where thousands of Cambodians were killed; being amongst the emptied mass graves, the dry earth littered here and there with clothing and human bones -- to say the least, was intense.. The huge temple-looking building in the center is filled with human skulls found at the site.. It was a solemn time of reflection and thinking..
After Cheung Ek, we went back to our guest house and from there I was able to walk along the crowded, small and huge city streets to an old school that was converted into a prison for those who were interrogated before being taken to the killing fields.. Toul Sleng looks like a prison.. Barbed and razor wire is spread all over, across the balconies of each floor of the building; this kept prisoners from escaping the torture and horrors of Toul Sleng by throwing themselves from the balconies.. Walking into the many rooms, converted into torture chambers and mass detention rooms, looking at the pictures found of all the prisoners held, the pictures of the torture victims found when the prisoners were liberated, all of this was very intense.. I felt like it was the Holocaust that we never were told about.. From Toul Sleng there were only, if I remember correctly, seven survivors out of the thousands that were held, at the time of liberation.. Much like the Holocaust survivors, the Cambodians sadly didn't see Pol Pot come to justice for his crimes, before he died in '98.. I encourage everyone reading this to take some time to look into the vast information on the internet about Cambodia's past..

February 04-06, 2008: Doc Lek

We needed peace and quiet.. Doc Lek supplied this.. A small oasis north of the cool/ugly Pismo or Long Beach look-a-like of Vietnam, Nha Trang, Paradise Resort is right on Doc Lek beach, in between Vietnamese villages, where the locals would fly along the beach on their motos (one wrecked really hard right in front of me, we thought he was dead at first!).. It was beautiful, quiet and fun.. The water was warm, the winds were our music, and the people we were with and ate with 3 times a day were all great.. The 80 something year old French owner's a little intense.. Go there..

February 02-04, 2008: Da Lat

We arrived really late (early) in Da Lat, and stayed in a clean, but weird place at the bus arrival point.. The next morning we set out on a mission to find a different place.. We walked all around and eventually met the nicest, most helpful person we'd meet in the whole country--a lady that spoke very good English and was walking her little poodle..... she had lived in the Bay Area for 10 some years.. She walked with us and we parted ways as we made a loop, unexpectedly, back to where we began; but before we arrived, we found a sweet room to stay at.. Da Lat is known as the Paris of Vietnam, and they even have a mini Eiffel Radio Tower.. I enjoyed the city a lot, even though there's still a love of crazy traffic that stops for no one, constant honking and crowds of tourists and locals.. We found some serenity at the waterfalls out of town (equipped with a sort of 'do it yourself' roller coaster), and checked out the huge market that's in the middle of town in a huge round-a-bout.. There were beautiful sites above the city that we found in search of the gondolas we never saw.. And in the nice park in center of town you could see the glaring contrast between the very lowest classes and the upper classes/tourist living areas.. It's a really nice city..

February 01, 2008: Saigon

We arrived back in Ha Noi early in the morning and took a taxi to the bus station, where we couldn't find anyone to help us escape.. We then took another expensive ride all the way back to the airport where we started.. We were determined to get out, as it was also freezing cold in most, if not all, of northern Vietnam.. After much bickering and quarrel, I won the fight, and was allowed to get us the hell out of that place..... we were going to the opposite side of the country: Saigon.. Ho Chi Minh City is a HUGE city with a lot of history.. This goes without saying.. That's why I don't know why I said it.. We arrived and were able to take a night bus to our next destination.. But first we had some time to walk around the huge crazy busy city, which was absolutely the opposite temperature-wise; it was 35 plus degrees Celsius with a terrible humidity to add insult to injury.. But I was loving it..... I was waiting for this moment ever since we landed in Vietnam.. The city is amazing; it's non-stop, it's thriving, it's alive, it's burning and churning, it's loco, it's loud and obnoxious.. It's the whole feel of Vietnam wrapped into one huge expanse of land that covers a large portion of the Southern part of the country.. I was also loving it.. But only because I knew I didn't have to stay very long..

This is how excited we were to leave the cold of northern Vietnam..

January 29-31, 2008: Sa Pa

Once we landed in Vietnam, it was dark.. We headed into town from the airport, to the train station, which was a long ride.. First impressions of Vietnam? Intense.. That describes the whole country all over in one word.. We were barely able to get a taxi to where we wanted to go, because not very many people speak English well enough there.. We were with 2 other girls who were staying at a hotel in town; we wanted to take a night train to Da Lat.. There was a miscommunication, as we ended up in town by where we thought the station was, but it wasn't.. I think those girls probably got dropped off right at the train station.. Dammit.. It was a long day and night, and finally we took another long expensive taxi ride to the station, and hassled our asses off to get a car with beds.. We were with two Vietnamese people, one girl who was working there during her school break for Chinese New Year (the worst several weeks to travel Asia).. She was nice and spoke a bit of English, but said the weather wasn't great in Sa Pa.. Well, it was worse.. It was below 0 degrees celcius, so foggy you couldn't see 50 ft, and raining.. It's close to the top of a mountain, so the views are amazing and there are villages close by you can hike to, but none of that was included in our stay.. We were charged for a crappy heater in our sub zero degree room, and heaters in most buildings were coal in open steel cage type things (not safe for health/fire hazards).. We didn't have any warm clothing (we're traveling Asia, dammit!), and were miserable.. After the night train arrived, we got on a bus at 4 something am, and took a long, windy, sickness-inducing (luckily I wasn't the only one this time!) ride up the mountain.. We stayed one night, then left the next day, but those were the longest couple dozen hours of our trip..

Village girls and women that make the multiple-hour hikes from their villages to the town, where they sell items to tourists and at the market..

Many villagers wake up hours before the sun to make the trip.. Most speak English better than the towns-folk!

Death heaters.... that don't work at all..

Visibility: not much..

Restaurants with fireplaces were the only place you could find a little heat... I mean, A LITTLE.. This is the only thing we did the whole time: hang out at this expensive restaurant by the fire/gato..

January 25-29, 2008: Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang: Laos' 2nd largest city at about 300k people, small-feeling, charming and touristy.. But great! Great food, great people, great sites, great temples, great night markets..... and it has a very European feel to it.. We ate almost every day by the Mekong river.. Our Belgium friends wanted to get involved with some elephants, so we decided to "wash" the elephants.. Pretty touristy, yeah, but great photo op.. I didn't do it, but I'm stoked on the pictures.. We had to dress up in these huge funny outfits that the handlers would wear.. After that, we headed down river by kayak, thinking we'd enjoy the kayaking experience again.... it POURED the WHOLE 3 hours, as SOON as we started.. It was pretty funny.. Then we parted ways from our friends, and we flew to Hanoi, Vietnam..

Elephant farts are long and disgusting.. This was that right here..

January 25, 2008: The River Trip

Right when we got back from our trek, I showered in a freezing shower at the Ecotourism Agency building, and we got into another minibus to take a 6 something hour drive to Nong Khiaw, a tiny town by the Nam Ou river, surrounded by huge cliffs covered in rainforests.. That whole region along the Nam Ou is breath thieving.. That's right, breath THIEVING!! BREATH YOINKING!! BREATH CAPTURING!! BREATH KIDNAPPING!!! aka BREATHNAPPING!!

I got incredibly car sick on the windy, bumpy, terribly terrible long way east to Nong Khiaw.. The poor driver had to stop several times so that I could lay on the ground and de-arrest my arrested muscles of misery.. Let me tell you to those who don't suffer from motion sickness--it's the worst thing that a perfectly healthy person shouldn't suffer through.. I've read that people with a keen sense of balance are more susceptible..... that says a lot about my inner ear, folks..

January 23-24, 2008: Trek of Life

We started a little early, drove out to a roadside village.. The villagers we were going to be staying with were there, selling a type of bark that the Chinese would buy and use for medicine.. Most of the 97 villagers were there, women, children, men, elderly, animals..... they all leave before sunrise and make the 4+ hour strenuous hike out of the deep valley they live in, into the rainforest, along the mountainsides, and back down to the road.. They do this many times a week, usually to sell a variety of crops and such.. We passed first through the roadside village of Ban Namleu, where a very small group of the Lanten people live.. We hiked for a while up the hill and into the forest, where we could here the voices of villagers collecting young bamboo in the bamboo forests.... We had lunch, then hiked a while more to the village, which is right next to the Nam Ha river.. We hung out, took some pictures, and basically just felt weird, like an intrusion.. Some of the elders were at the village, watching the animals and the youngest children.. It was impossible to communicate with them, other than elementary sign language..... I like showing the kids my pictures.. They seem to enjoy looking at them.. Our guide, Sai, and our river guide who brought the boats down the river for us, Khan, made us a great dinner.. Sai took some time to join in the kataw game a couple young villagers were playing; a game similar to volleyball, without using your arms or hands.. Wim and I joined, and caught on.... not quickly though.. It was really really fun.. Darkness fell as the villagers returned -- we didn't really hang out together; most or all the villages have built for farang a larger-than-any-other-building-in-the-village guesthouse (there's a couple pictures of their school, it's the one with the flag pole in front of it--our guesthouse was probably bigger).. Yeah, it was just a single room bamboo hut with a bamboo floor and roof, but it was plush compared to anything else in the village.. And they had brought in a SWEET porcelain toilet: like we were royalty.. The villagers seemed to not really care about us, or seemed used to farang staying there on their tours.... which made it an even weirder place to be for a white-ass foreigner.. But when dinner was served, we were joined by some of the elders and chiefs of the village.. Through Sai we conversed, describing our feelings about their world and trying to portray our ridiculously (compared to) and unnecessarily complicated worlds, sharing drinks of 'happy water'...... it was a magical, emotional, moving and humbling evening.. The next morning, after a very nice, warm, comfy, cool nite under our mosquito nets, we awoke and hung out a little with some of the villagers and children.. It was wonderful.. We took off from there, onto the river, our stuff in drybags, and our expectations absent; just pure excitement.. Then, like 10 minutes down the river, which was really shallow the whole way (some pushing/pulling of the boats, lots of getting stuck), we get into an accident and Erica gets trapped in the river under a tree.. It was really ridiculous and a stupid accident, and she was shook up.. But after rearranging the teams of boats, Wim and I battled our way down the Nam Ha to the Nam Tha, through the protected forests of the Nam Ha wilderness, while the girls had safe journeys with our guides.. We stopped in a small village that was smaller than the one we stayed in, I forget the name.. The women wore traditional clothing, the people made paper and purses and baskets, the children played with the most simple of toys, dragging rocks and each other around in the dirt.. We bought some cool paper and other things, donated for their school and were on our way.. We made it, a fun, long day.. I would recommend it to everyone.. Get out of the bubble, and get in someone else's.... someone who has nothing compared to you--yet has so much more in so many ways.. We entered the worlds of the Khmu and the Lanten people rich spoiled Westerners; and left Ban Nalan Tai village humbled and appreciative..

January 22, 2008: Luang Nam Tha

We spent the night in Luang Nam Tha after crossing into Laos and taking a long minibus ride to the town, through GORGEOUS green lush rainforesty mountainsides and valleys, along a really rough with potholes, construction, and all sorts of random animals/people/objects (although a ton of work has gone into the road improvements).. We didn't have the greatest luck with hot water on our whole trip, and in this case, humorously, we got rooms with our new Belgian friends at a guest house that "had hot water.." But we didn't have hot water.. Luckily, accommodations are so cheap, we got a room in the NEXT door guest house, which was nicer and had BEAUTIFULLY hot water.. So we stayed in two places that night.. It was awesome.. We hung out, and decided on a trek to do.. Ecotourism is really big in Asia, and in Luang Nam Tha the tiny villages that you're guided to and stay in benefit financially from your trips.. And there was only four of us, including our new friends.. So we decided on one day of trekking and one day of kayaking.. It was going to turn out to be the most amazing part of our trip........

January 22, 2008: Border Crossing at Huay Xai

This was the beginning of yet another long day of travel.. We woke up, and went to the border crossing in Chiang Khong.. We made it across, a whole one minute trip! The other side was crazy, cuz so many farang were on the same quest as us..... so getting a visa at the other side, Huay Xai, was a lengthy, disorganized, crazy business.. Then we had a little time before we peaced out to Luang Nam Tha, so we walked around the town of Huay Xai to look at..... well, not much.. Our first look at this beautiful, interestingly odd country..

January 21, 2008: On the road to Chiang Khong

We had a long journey from Pai.. It was a journey back to Chiang Mai, then east to Chiang Khong, where we would cross the river/border into Laos.. Before the sun set, we stopped in a small village where there was an awesome local market outside of Chiang Khong.. There were all kinds of animal parts, vegetables, bugs, and.... stuff.. It was great.. Unlike Chiang Khong..

This woman scored.. We watched as a British farang (foreigner) we were with unknowingly dropped some 20 baht at his feet, his friend picking it up.. He turned around and handed it to this woman, completely unaware it was his friend's.. He tried to explain that she dropped this, and left her in a hilarious state of confusion.. Soon, half the market place was staring at the group of haggard British farang who curiously handed people money.. We were busting up....

She didn't get any money..

January 17-20, 2008: Pai

Even more north is a smaller town called Pai.. It was recommended by a couple people before I left, one being a complete stranger.... so we thought, why not? It's supposed to be a "Hippy Town," sounds intriguing enough.. It was amazing! A little touristy, like most places on the beaten path, but small, personal, beautiful, alive, and accommodating.. We splurged (for a whopping $10 a piece) for a gorgeous bungalow within a mini rainforest of green.. An organic vegetarian restaurant/spa saw us every day at their riverside tables, where we spent more there than our accommodations.. We rented a "scooter," which is dangerous there, but explored safely and went on a hike to some disappointing waterfalls, only to return triumphantly to find out we probably didn't go far enough.. If I could live for a long time in one place, Pai would be at the top of my list..

January 14-17, 2008: Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is an amazing city, and has a lot of charm for a city of over one million people.. We met an Australian friend on the plane there (who, after splitting ways, we saw again at our next destination--something we found happened a lot with us recognizing people all over Asia from other places) and lived cheaply for a couple days.. We took a cooking class at a vegetarian restaurant (Northern Thailand is more attuned to vegetarianism), which was a highlight..

I've discovered it's especially hard to limit my photo selection.... I just want you all to feel like you're there!

They love reggae.... you know what's awesome? A Thai person with fat dreads.. Serious..

I arrived in Bangkok on the 13th, late at night, retrieved by my best friend/munch Erica.. We will be moving around Asia together, starting here in Bangkok.. But it's not the place for us, so after a night's rest, and an early morning swim, some pics, we were off to Northern Thailand.... Chiang Mai.. Our view was nice, tho, wasn't it? It has been some time since my last entries, but at least there's a lot of fun stuff to catch up on.. I've been sick as a dog the last several days, as many people are/have been, but I haven't been motivated enough to take my free time and put it towards photo sorting.. But there will be a lot of cool things to be checking up on, for example:

I took a last-minute month long trip to Southeast Asia, a trip most people didn't know I took.. This was in mid-January to mid-February.. I got back last Monday, and then lack of sleep and over working put me in bed, sick as all hell.. But I'm excited about my pictures, and a lot of people have been saying they wanna see them..

Last Sunday, Jill and I shot her good friend's wedding in San Jose.. It was good, I think we got some good pictures, even though I haven't even looked at my pictures..

I'm going home next weekend to see my family for the first time since Christmas, and I'm pretty excited.. I think I'll do a lot of blogging from there, since all I want to do is chill out..

Also, I'll try to get the slideshows previously posted working again..

I crashed out after the shoot at the Hide at after 0200ish am, then got up at 0530ish to drive 4 hours to Hume, CA, where my best buddy Eric Turner works as the head photographer at Hume Lake Christian Camps.. He asked me to shoot some friends' wedding with him, and I excitedly had agreed.. We had way too much fun, and even though the dark setting was hard to shoot, I think we got a lot of good pictures.. We might start a business together.... you think we got what it takes?

Hide Gallery Art Party of Life: December 14, 2007

My house mate and a buddy of his put on a show at the Hide Art Gallery in Santa Cruz, CA.. He's a DJ and had some of his friends join him in spinning some sweet reggae, dubstep and hip hop while artists painted live in front of the crowd.. There was also Burlesque, belly dancing and fire dancing, so there was a lot of great stuff to shoot.. My house mate asked me to be the official photographer, and I felt blessed to be able to make my own art next to some really cool people..

I traveled with Jill and her family to L.A. to shoot her friend's wedding.. It was a really pleasant, outdoor wedding.. It was a bit cold, but they went barefoot and toughed it out.. Jeni sang a song with an amazing voice, and they washed each others feet.. And me? Well, I took some PICTURES!!

Fashion Shoot: Not really, November 30, 2007

Elizabeth and I went out for a little shoot just for fun.. We went out right when the sun was coming down, so there definitely wasn't any light I didn't have a flash.... thank goodness for high ISO speeds.. When the night stole our fun times, we sought refuge in some shopping/restaurant plaza.. We had fun being on the opposite end of the lens; it's..... weird.. What do I do? I'm putting these pictures online without her permission, so I'll probably get in trouble.. Don't tell her..

Trail of Two Cities: November 11, 2007

This run was in Fresno, and luckily I was able to stay at my sister's place the night before, because I had to be there at 0630.. It was a good shoot, the weather was cool, dark and great for running, PERFECT for shots, and it surprisingly didn't rain until right when I was leaving.. There were some fun people running.... there was also a relay for people who wanted to run or walk with teams to divide up the distance.. The half marathon was the longest distance, but next year they're going to have a full marathon.. The thing that I enjoyed the least was the terrible cover band..

Metro Silicon Valley Run: November 4, 2007

After Janelle and Casey's wedding, I crashed at Jill's because I had to work nearby early the next day.. I shot the Silicon Valley Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k.. The first place winner of the half marathon breezed in a good three minutes before anyone else, and he was just cruising like it was no problem, munching on a bagel.. I was impressed.. He probably took a taxi.. I shot the half marathon finish, then was asked to help out at the full finish.. It wasn't too bad, I got some fun shots of happy people....

Bradley Family: October 26, 2007

A shoot that I forgot to mention was a family shoot that I accompanied Jill last minute on.. We went to the Bradley family's house to shoot their growing family.. Jill needed some help so I helped out.. I didn't have my camera, so I played jester to get the attention of Henry.. I picked up Jill's camera to shoot a couple pictures before we left..... he was hungry..

We went back to the San Juan Oaks Golf Resort again this weekend to shoot Janelle and Casey's fun time of a wedding.. They were a super easy-going couple that were happy with everything and everyone.. They love Mexican food, so they had a salsa jar for every guest and an awesome buffet with all kinds of great Mexican food.. Each table was labeled after a restaurant that they had memories at.. We all had a lot of good times..

Ingrid & Edward: October 27, 2007

Ingrid and Edwards wedding was held at the mission in San Juan Bautista, CA.. It was great; beautiful day, beautiful people, beautiful colors, and a cat.. The cat that lived on the mission grounds decided Ingrid's dress would be a good place to rest, right in the middle of the ceremony.. Ingrid and Edward are Filipino, so the wedding was really pretty with lots of family.. The reception was held at the San Juan Oaks Golf Resort, and the bride and groom had a group of dancers that performed traditional dance from the Philippines.. At one point, they had long bamboo staffs laid on the ground moving around in criss-crossed patterns, and had a dancer stepping in between the gaps.. It was cool.. The bride and groom danced with people that pinned money all over their clothing.. Someone had to bring the ball and chain.. I had a lot of great pictures that I was stoked on.... but then again, with so many awesome opportunities, how could I not?

Nike 26.2: October 21, 2007

A little behind, again, but I've been super busy.. So I'm going to put everything that I've been shooting on the blog today.. The Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco was intense.. It's the biggest women's marathon in the world, and this year there were 80,000 participants in San Francisco.. All over the nation, though, people were also running, adding another 3,000 participants abroad.. It was kind of cool how it worked: the two world powers, Nike and Apple, teamed up to create a microchip that goes in your shoe and transmits distance and other information to your iPod while running, in which you can upload to the Nike website where runners collaboratively add their information and money raised and whatnot.. So it was huge.. It's a new marathon, I think only 4 years old, but in those last four years, there's been something like $65M+ raised for lymphoma and leukemia all together.. There were something like 50+ countries represented, and every single U.S. state was represented.. Even some big names were there, soccer maestro Brandi Chastain, and big names in marathon history.. I had a really hard time shooting that many people.. There were constantly thousands of women running at me.. It was insane.. We had a lot of shooters, of course.. Nike even gave us finish shooters free shoes, which, as much as I dislike Nike and think they're far from a good company to support, are some of the comfiest shoes I own..

Ellora's Baby Pics: October 10, 2007

One of Jill's old friends wanted some baby pics of her daughter, Ellora.. We went to San Juan Bautista to the mission, and it was a beautiful post-storm day.. Ellora was awesome -- adorable, fun, and smiled a lot -- she loved the camera, and wasn't too fussy and not scared at all.. She did really well for her 12 month age!

Morro Bay Harbor Festivel: October 7, 2007

Casey & Jessie: October 6, 2007

Yee-freakin'-haw.... this was quite the experience.. Beautiful setting, down by Big Sur again in the hills overlooking, well, heaven.. Brazil Ranch is now closed to public events, but Casey and Jessie know the people who live on the land so they got hooked up.. They both grew up in the area, and were pretty 'country'.... it was kind of awkward/entertaining listening to Jessie and his friends talk about guns and hunting and alcohol.. Lots of country music (terrible) and accents.. People were really awesome, especially the bride and groom..

Glide Floss Bridge to Bridge: September 30, 2007, San Francisco, CA, 0800hr

Early morning again.. Hurray! Off to the city to navigate the complex streets of Frisco, over to the base of the Gate.. This was fun after I got situated and whatnot..... there were 6000 participants, so it was intense shooting.. Luckily, I was with some other shooters at a part of the race where only the 12k runners came through.. There were a lot of fun people, and although I missed a lot of people and shots (unavoidable)(that's why we had 10 other shooters throughout), I was like a turret gunner shooting at thousands of enemy aircraft, bam bam bam!

Roberta & Gary: September 29, 2007, Los Gatos, CA, 1530hr

Another Jewish wedding that was pretty fun.. It was in the Opera House in Los Gatos.. They were fun, and they had a lot of fun family and friends.. We were in this small venue the entire night, so it was kind of redundant after a while, and we were hired for an hour more than needed (2330hr!!).. But we were still able to pull out some good images, that's for sure.. I wasn't feeling that great at first, then by the end of the night, besides being in kind of a bad mood because of the eminent early morning the next day, I was feeling better.. I didn't shoot as much that night.. After going through my images, I didn't get what I thought I got, so I'm kind of bummed.. And I realized that Gary blinked in almost all of my shots, so that was a bummer.. But I like the images I chose for the blog, and I think I'm just being hard on myself..

I decided to rock the B&W on the blog for a change..

Big Sur Marathon, Big Sur, CA: September 29, 2007, 0900hr

The beginning of the end.... got up at 0630hr to go down to Big Sur.. It was perfectly clear! Not great for pics, but at least I could see the ocean.. The participants, there were about 420, ran Old Coast Road, a dirt road that spawns off of Highway Uno and travels up and down the coastals for maybe 11 or 12 miles, and spits you out at Bixby Bridge, the scenic Hwy 1 bridge that most of us would recognize from pics.. They let me drive my car up the road (I wish I had a Subaru or something fun!) to let me do my thing.... I pretty much had creative freedom.. I think I found a decent setup, especially with time constraints (I had to be back in San Jose for the wedding).. It was fun, and very nice..... kind of windy and very cool, it was nice.. I was shooting in ditches and from hillsides, getting dirty and almost falling here and there.. Good times!

I got it...... so here it is:

Olympic Triathlon is a .93M swim, 24.8M bike and a 6.2M run.. Also known as "international distance", "standard course", or "short course.." This was the Sentinel Triathlon that I just shot..

Half Triathlon is a 1.2M swim, 56M bike and a 13.1M run.. Also known as a "medium distance" or 70.3.. This was the Kahuna Triathlon I shot..

Full Triathlon is 2.4M swim, 112M bike and a 26.2M run.. Also known as the IRONMAN!!! The World Champion ship is held in Hawaii and you gotta be invited to it.. I think you have to have a handfull of other full triathlons under your belt..

I picked up another job! I AM shooting the Big Sur 5k, half Marathon, and full Marathon on Saturday morning.. It's going to be a long weekend.. I have to be down in Big Sur at 0830hr, then in San Jose at Jill's before 1500hr to shoot the wedding in Los Gatos until probably after 2130hr, then be in San Fran at 0730hr on Sunday.. THEN, on a sidenote, a housemate is moving out on Sunday as my floormate moves into her room, then Monday our NEW housemate is moving upstairs to be my floormate, so hopefully I'll be able to take Monday off.. Then back to the work/school grindstone.......... dangit, when will I get a break?

SC Sentinel Triathlon, September 23, 2007

I had fun shooting this triathlon.. It was a very clear day with some clouds, which provided a nice light when covering the sun.. That's the best part about shooting not only that early, but also here in Santa Cruz, because you can always bet there's going to be some coverage in the mornings..

I saw a lot of people doing this triathlon that I recognized from the Big Kahuna Triathlon! What savages..... and you know, I didn't see my boss (from Patagonia) (the store) (yeah, I work there too) (sometimes), so I don't have any shots of him.. He probably wasn't there.. I shot the swim exit before the participants transitioned to bikes, then I shot the bikers coming back in.. It was hard to shoot everybody, which is my goal so that participants can go online and buy their pic, because they were running up a narrow pathway, so they were all bunched up.. It's frustrating missing people, that's what pisses me off the most (even tho it's inevitable), so positioning like that really puts your attention and skills to the test.. But background is super important to making these into sellable pictures, that the nice cliff backdrop I was framing was key.. You'd think there would be a lot of lovely backgrounds to shoot over, but a lot of times the races don't go along Westcliff (along the cliffs and ocean's edge), and go through the neighborhoods.. Even when they go up H1 into Wilder State Park and Davenport, we have to stay close to the start and finish because we usually have one shooter for multiple legs of the race.. So my shots of the riders had to be far enough away from transition that they were still riding hard, doing something cool like turning or sprinting, and still in their shoes (which a lot of people were not in my Kahuna shots).. I went for a nice shaded, rich-colored wood fence, and shot the riders as they came just out of the shade into the perfect light over their right shoulder, so they really popped out off the dark background.. It worked out well, but I'm always in a dangerous spot being right on the edge of the road or actually in the road..... I should wear body armor..

This was a half triathlon, I think -- I thought that it was the other way around, but this course was 1/26/7 or something like that, and the Kahuna was 2/52/16 or something.. I'm confused......

This Saturday Jill and I are shooting in Los Gatos until late, then I have to be in San Fran by 0730 to shoot the Bridge to Bridge 7k/12k..... I'm not stoked.. But stay posted!

Oh what fun it is to partayyyyyyyyy like it's 2007..... which is exactly what I did at Whitney and Bryan's wedding.. Kinda.. Well, maybe I just worked, as usual.. It was great fun, though.. Another fun, easy going couple, and we were ahead of schedule as far as portraits and important things like that.. It took place in the metropolis of Alamo, CA, which is actually quite a nice place.. If my memory serves me correctly, the reception was at Mt. Diablo Resort, in Mt. Diablo State Park...... takes a pretty penny to hold a reception like they had at that sweet venue..

I was reading up on my Holy Word, getting warmed up for the ceremony......

Big Kahuna Triathlon: Santa Cruz, CA, September 9, '07

This was a fun shoot.. There were about 1,000 participants, and I got a lot of fun pictures.. It was pretty challenging shooting so many riders at once (I was in charge of the biking portions in and out of transition), but not as hard as runners.. People seemed to distance themselves a little more from each other and didn't cluster so much, probably because each person was on their own more, and runs people often do with friends and fam.. Shooting the Kahuna made me really excited to shoot the Sentinel, which is a full triathlon.... I'll be shooting the swim exit and biking.. And one of my boss' is participating, hahaha! Collateral....

I was surprised at the number of celebrities in town that came to participate...... check it out..........

Gilbert Gottfried: Internationally feared amongst even the best triathletes..

This guy was trying to tell me about his heart problems..
